alb3680769 Madonna and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Fra Bartolomeo (Bartolomeo di Paolo del Fattorino) (Italian, Florence 1473-1517 Florence). Dimensions: 23 x 17 1/4 in. (58.4 x 43.8 cm). Date: ca. 1497.Mother and child are shown in a softly lit domestic interior with a view out the window of a mill copied from a painting by Hans Memling, whose portraits were prized among Florentines. By contrast, the lively play of hands, the elaborate configuration of the drapery, and the treatment of light are Fra Bartolomeo's response to the work of Leonardo da Vinci. Fra Bartolomeo was among the most creative painters in late-fifteenth-century Florence. This work was painted before he joined the Dominican order. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3610217 Study of a Woman and Child. Artist: Sir Joshua Reynolds (British, Plympton 1723-1792 London). Dimensions: sheet: 10 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. (26.7 x 18.4 cm). Date: 1745-92.The woman's seated pose is remarkably dynamic: as she turns to gaze over her shoulder, curls tumble from her coiffure, and folds of drapery spill across her lap, revealing slender legs crossed at the ankles. By contrast to the careful articulation of her face, her fingers are only schematically indicated, while the contours of the child's naked body are succinctly described in short strokes of black chalk. This rare compositional study by Sir Joshua Reynolds--the leading British portrait painter of the eighteenth century, first president of the Royal Academy, an influential theoretician of art, and a distinguished collector--is not related to any known painting. But its allusion to the Madonna and Child, and severely classicizing, Michelangelesque style link it to the artist's most accomplished grand-manner portraits of the 1770s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb9495692 Studies of Hands, 1770s-1780s, Attributed to Louis Roland Trinquesse, French, 1745 - c. 1800, 14 3/4 x 10 3/8 in. (37.47 x 26.35 cm) (image), Red chalk on white laid paper, France, 18th century, This previously unidentified drawing has recently been attributed to Louis Roland Trinquesse, a French genre and portrait painter whose accomplished red chalk studies were avidly collected in his lifetime. The depiction of hands proved difficult for Trinquesse, who often painted them as clumsy and misshapen. This shortcoming may have prompted the artist to execute some hand studies from life. His skillful handling of the chalk in this sheet and meticulous description of parts of the hands, as well as drapery and buttoned sleeves contrast with its awkward portrayal of some of the fingers. The largest hand, for instance, is shown with a disproportionately long thumb, and the hand in the middle in the sheet is also distorted, with an oddly shaped, extended thumb and arthritically strained joints and knuckles.

(38 x 24.7 cm) (sheet), Red chalk on cream laid paper, backed with Japanese paper, Italy, 16th century, Given that apprentices would enter a master's workshop around the age of 9 or 10, Ferraù Fenzoni likely borrowed one of his young assistants for this sheet. Here the boy poses in mounds of thick drapery while seated on a chair. The figure points directly at the artist - - a difficult pose sustained with the aid of a staff to support the boy's hand. Fenzoni represented this daringly foreshortened gesture with extraordinary skill.

This boldly drawn male figure seated on clouds is the Old Testament prophet Balaam, who adorns one of the chapel's pendentives, that is, a triangular area beneath the dome. Maratti executed countless drawings for this important papal commission; at least eight extant studies can be associated with Balaam. In this one, Maratti focused on the figure's active pose, which would change very little in subsequent studies and in the final mosaic, and on the back of the sheet, he worked out Balaam's pointing hand gesture. In other drawings he continued to adjust various details, like the figure's head and the general placement of the drapery. Once every detail was perfected, Maratti, or a senior member of his large workshop, would have produced a full-scale drawing called a 'cartoon' for the mosaicist.

alb9423410 Theseus and Pirithoüs Clearing the Earth of Brigands, Deliver Two Women from the Hands of their Abductors, 1806, Marie-Joséphine-Angélique Mongez, French, 1775 - 1855, 23 3/8 × 29 1/2 in. (59.44 × 74.93 cm) (sheet)31 3/4 × 37 3/4 × 2 3/8 in. (80.65 × 95.89 × 6.03 cm) (outer frame), Black, white, blue, ochre chalks on ivory paper, France, 19th century, Mongez enjoyed success as a history paintera rare and grand achievement for a woman artist active during the Napoleonic era. She studied with Jacques-Louis David, the most influential artist in France. Mongezs paintings were exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1802 until 1827. Mongezs drawing relates to a painting exhibited at the Salon of 1806, which was acquired by the Russian Prince Youssoupoff. Plutarchs 'Life of Theseus' inspired the composition. The legendary Greek hero sought to rid his kingdom of brigands. Here, Theseus and his companion the Lapith Pirithoüs rescue two maidens from their abductors. Theseus wields a club at the bandit who attempts to flee on horseback, while Peirithoüs, after overpowering a second bandit with his sword, lowers a maiden from a rearing horse. Mongezs mastery of Davids lessons is revealed in the skillfully drawn figures, horses, and drapery all disposed in a rhythmic composition. In contrast to the passages of black and white chalks, Mongez subtly colors Pirithoüss sword sheath with light blue chalk and flesh tones in ochre chalk.

Date: 1853-54.Durieu was a lawyer and early advocate and practitioner of photography in France. In 1853-54 he made a series of photographic studies of nude and costumed figures as models for artists. The French Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix helped him pose the figures and later praised the results, from which he and other artists sketched. Often photographers posed their models in attitudes based on sanctioned works of classical statuary or Old Master paintings, ostensibly providing artists with photographic académies as an alternative to live models. The mantle of high art also served to cloak (albeit somewhat transparently) the nakedness of such images and thereby protect the photographer from the actions of the censor and the viewer from the scorn of society. Date: 1853-54.Durieu was a lawyer and early advocate and practitioner of photography in France who, in 1853-54, made a series of photographic studies of nude and costumed figures as models for artists. The French Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix helped him pose the figures and later praised the prints, from which he sketched, as "palpable demonstrations of the free design of nature." While the painter saw the accurate transcription of reality as a virtue of photography, Durieu knew that a good photograph was not simply the result of the correct use of the medium but, more significantly, an expression of the photographer's temperament and vision. In an important article he emphasized the interpretative nature of the complex manipulations in photography and explained that the photographer must previsualize his results so as to make a "picture," not just a "copy."This photograph proves Durieu's point: through the elegant contours of the drapery, the smooth modeling of the flesh, and the grace and restraint of the pose, the picture attains an artistic poise that combines Delacroix's sensuality with Ingres's classicism, and rivals both. alb3601964 [Female Nude in Studio]. Artist: Franck-François-Genès Chauvassaignes (French, 1831-after 1900). Dimensions: 19.1 x 15.2 cm (7.5 x 6 in.). Date: 1856-59.This corner of a painter's atelier somewhere in France in the middle of the nineteenth century is scarcely tethered to time or place; it could as easily be a loft in New York today or, had photography existed four centuries earlier, a studio in the Italian Renaissance. What is surprising here is the absence of even the thinnest disguise--no swags of drapery, elaborate coiffure, or skeins of beads as are commonly found in the work of other purveyors of "studies for artists." Here, the model is utterly naked. With her intelligent head and dirty feet, this young woman helped found the matter-of-fact modeling sorority joined a decade later by Édouard Manet's Olympia.
